Leicesters Best Dance Crew 2014
12 dance crews performed at Curve Theatre on Saturday 1 February, in the sold-out event run by 2Funky Arts with the £1K cash prize. Some crews were created specifically for the competition; illustrating the significance of the event in relation to Leicester’s annual cultural calendar.
Dancers performed for a panel of professional judges and were scored on a range of categories, including synchronicity, musicality and originality. The panel included 2013 semi finalist BGTJoseph (QMX), Trinity Warrior’s dancer Foggy and commercial choreographer Ben Davis.
Crews from schools, colleges, universities, community dance groups, friendship groups and dance schools entered. This was the 5th year running that the event has been staged, and it has been sold out each time.
Leicester act DMU Steppers were crowned official winners. Their stepping style had its origins in African American culture. Second place went to So Damn Hype, and third to Monstrous Martians. As well as the main competition, there was a cash prize for the best dancer in the audience.
Previous winners have gone onto perform as part of high profile dance shows such as Street Dance (Channel 4), Britain’s Got Talent (ITV) and Got to Dance (Sky1).
